- ===== [1] About ShowPages
-
- ShowPages is a small utility for downloading PostScript code and
- printing ASCII text file to your PS printer. The main features are:
-
- 1. You can download PS code in the background (Using PrintMonitor)
- 2. You can print your documents simply by drag & drop.
- 3. It treats text whose first 2 bytes are '%!' as postscript code,
- otherwise as plain text.
-
- ShowPage 1.4 is Freeware.
-
-
- ===== [2] What's new
-
- Changes from MacLPR 1.3.2
- 1. The name was changed from 'MacLPR' to 'ShowPages'.
- 2. Minor bug fixed.
- 3. You can edit header and footer.
- 4. You can print the TEXT on Clipboard.
- 6. You can draw Bounding box of PS figure.
- 7. Apple Events support.
-
-
- ===== [3] How to use
-
- Simply drag & drop your text file. Press option-key while
- launching, the page setup dialog will be appeared.
-
-
- ===== [4] Main menu
-
- Followings are all of the menu items of ShowPages.
- File
- Print / Print Clipboard / Page Setup / Quit
- Edit
- Undo / Cut / Copy / Paste/ Clear
- Except for 'Undo', you can use Edit menu items in Edit box in the
- dialog (Sys7 or later).
-
- Followings are description about menu of MacLPR:
-
- [Print...]
- You can print PS file or plain ASCII file, by selecting the file
- and clicking open button.
-
- [Print Clipboard...]
- You can print the contents of Clipboard (with TEXT data).
-
- [Page Setup...]
- Page Setup Dialog will be appeared. Following buttons are added
- to Standard Print Style Dialog box:
- (Even if you keep pressing option key while drag & drop
- launching, this dialog box will be appeared)
-
- 1. Show Print Dialog
- The Print Job dialog will be appeared when printing. Please
- check this option as you want to get 2 or more copies of
- same file.
- 2. Add 'Showpage' to PS file
- Add 'showpage' operator to the end of the PS file. For
- example, please check this option, when you want to print
- EPS files generated by Adobe Illustrator.
- 3. BBFig Support
- This is options for calculating the bounding box of
- Postscript figure. When you need this option, check 'BBFig
- support' and then select 'BBox' or 'Grid'.
-
- * BBox: The dashed rectangle which encloses the Postscript
- figure and the coordinate of the rectangle will be printed.
- * Grid: The grid and coordinate axis (like section paper)
- will be printed.
-
- You may prefer 'BBox' rather than 'Grid'. But sometimes
- 'BBox' calculation fails, especially in case of including
- bitmap image in PS code. Then you must choose 'Grid' and
- read the coordinate with your eyes.
-
- If you never need this option, please delete 'TEXT' resource
- ID=131, 132 with ResEdit. Then the 'BBFig Support' check
- box will be disabled.
-
- 4. Plain Text Layout
- Setup for plain text printing. Decide which you prefer, one
- column or two columns.
- 5. Plain Text Font
- Setup the font face and size for printing plain text.
- 6. Long Lines are
- Select the operation for too long lines in plain text file.
- * Truncated: the long lines are truncated at the right edge
- of the page.
- * Wrapped around: long lines are wrapped around to next line.
-
- 7. Header & Footer...
- Make setting of header, footer and border line. In the
- string of Header & footer, you can use following 'special
- string'.
-
- [fname] file name
- [page] number of page
- [cdate] File creation date
- [ctime] File creation time
- [mdate] File modification date
- [mtime] File modification time
- [date] Current date
- [time] Current time
- [user] User name (defined in Shared Setup cdev)
- (Under System 6.0x, defined in Chooser)
- [mac] Machine name (defined in Shared Setup cdev)
- (Unusable under System 6.0x)
- [-] Horizontally extentable space. Similar to \hfill of TeX.
-
- You can input these special strings from the pencils icon
- on the upper right corner of this dialog. Of course, you can
- type directory from keyboard.
-
- (example)
- "[-]=[page]=[-]"
- centering page number between "=" symbols. Like =1=.
- "[fname][-][user]@[mac]"
- The File name at left side and user name and machine
- name at right side.
-
- The settings in 1-5 are written in application file of MacLPR and
- will be retrieved when MacLPR is invoked at next time.
-
- The options available on Standard PrintStyleDialog and
- PrintJobDialog are invalid in MacLPR except 'Paper Size', 'Paper
- Orientation' and 'Page Copies'.
-
-
- ===== [5] Note
-
- It uses PicComments for sending postscript code, so you should not
- send code which include some operator like 'exitserver' or
- 'initgraphics'... (see Apple's tech note #91). I think almost all
- postscript codes of PICTURE are OK.
-
- The BBox function, which calculates bounding box of PS figure,
- depends on Bernie Cosell's 'bb.ps'. 'bb.ps' is included 'bbfig
- rev1.14' archive, you can find it on anonymous ftp site as
- bbfig.1.14.shar. If you have some problems or questions about this
- function, please send Mr.Cosell also. His e-mail address is
- cosell@bbn.com.
-
-
- ===== [6] FAQ
-
- Q. Why my Postscript figure is shifted toward one corner of the page?
- A. Please select correct paper size in Page Setup dialog. Hold
- option key when drag & drop launching, the Page Setup dialog will
- be appeared.
-
- Q. How can I send my Postscript code to unix lpd?
- A. You cannot. The previous name 'MacLPR' might cause this
- misunderstanding. To do this, you need CAP on your UNIX host or
- info-mac:util/lpr-12.hqx on your Mac.
-
- Q. I want to edit header string/ want to change the size of header/
- want to disappear the border line.
- A. Now you can do with this new version!
-
-

-
- You can change these settings by using ResEdit.
-
- 'STR#' resource ID=128
